With help from City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, the MCDC was able to purchase five street sweepers. The purpose of the street sweepers, or “green machines” as we refer to them due to their color, is to remove trash, debris, and leaves from the streets. This effort was the complment to our greening effort throughout Mayfair.
With “Clean & Green” as our slogan here at the CDC we are constantly thinking of ways to improve the quality of life here in Mayfair. Last year our green machines picked up over 60 tons of refuse. Jim Berghaier, who oversees this project, does a fantastic job of covering the neighborhood. The sweepers not only cover main thoroughfares like Frankford Avenue and Cottman Avenue, but they also cover areas around neighborhood schools, Pennypack Park, and residential streets. The Sweepers run everyday from 8-12, during the months Of April through September except for rainy days. Along with running the machines, Jim and his crew remove trash from cans along the avenue, help with graffiti removal, and look after several of our “greening” projects throughout the neighborhood. Next time you see Jim or one of his crew,be sure to thank them for doing their part to keep Mayfair “a great place to live and work.”
